What to Wear for Family Photos
Feeling a bit unsure or overwhelmed about what everyone should wear? That’s normal, you’re not alone!
Here are a few tips to help guide you.
Most importantly, be yourself
If your family isn't particularly dressy, don't feel like you need to show up in formal clothes to your shoot. Wear something that feels like you.
The best photos happen when everyone is comfortable, so prioritize feeling good! Don’t put your toddler in something they can't wait to take off.
Think coordinated, not matching
You don't need everyone wearing the same color. Instead, think about choosing a general color palette with complementary tones.
Soft neutrals, earthy tones, creams, warm browns and muted colors tend to photograph beautifully together. The goal is for everyone's outfits to feel like they belong together without looking identical.
Skip the graphics and neon
Logos, large graphics and fluorescent colors can be distracting. Bright neon colors can also cast strange color reflections onto skin.
When in doubt, simpler is usually better.
Start with Mom
If you're not sure where to begin, Mom, pick your outfit first.
Choose something you feel really good in, then build everyone else's outfits around it. This is often much easier than trying to find four outfits that somehow work together at the same time.
Still not sure? Make a Pinterest board
If you're struggling, scroll through Pinterest.
Save a few family photos, outfits, colors and textures that you love. You'll start to notice patterns in what you're drawn to, and it can make pulling everyone's outfits together much easier.
And remember, there really isn't one “right” way to dress for family photos.
My biggest piece of advice is to choose clothes that make you feel comfortable and like yourselves. Years from now, I want you to look at these photos and remember not so much what you were wearing, but what this season of life felt like.
